This study delves into the artistic world of Liaozhai Zhiyi·Anqidao and explores the historical figure Liu Hongxun, focusing on the dynamics between the narrative and its protagonist.Pu Songling crafted the narrative of Anqidao by blending the idyllic aspirations commonly held by the Chinese with tales of Liu Hongxun's diplomatic missions to Joseon, which were widely known in his native region. In the novel,Joseon is depicted as a mystical realm, serving as the gateway to Anqidao, with the Joseon king possessing celestial knowledge and treasures.Joseon and the Ming Dynasty resumed maritime diplomatic missions unexpectedly after two centuries. The pivotal figure of this first unplanned voyage was Liu Hongxun, the protagonist of Anqidao.During his return journey by sea,Liu Hongxun survived two life-threatening shipwrecks. These calamities prompted him to reflect on his previous greed and errors during his diplomatic mission to Joseon. After returning to court, these reflections spurred a transformation, inspiring him to dedicate his life to servingthe nation, thus marking a significant turn in his character development.
