There are more than 250 stories in Liaozhai Zhiyi describing people or things outside Shandong,among which more than 20 even containing foreign exchanges.Some of these descriptions form separate stories,some constitute certain plot,and some are just names of foreign items.As literary presentation of foreign communication,it has various connotations including peaceful coexis-tence in politics,mutual benefits in economy and pluralistic symbiosis in cul-ture.Today,these descriptions are significant in understanding Pu Songling's in-ner feelings and philosophical thoughts,learning the mentality of novelty seek-ing in foreign exchanges,grasping the cultural mentality during foreign ex-changes at that time and enhancing current foreign exchanges.Fully realizing the aforementioned rich connotation and multiple meanings will deepen the cognition of foreign exchanges in that time,which will provide lessons to and useful help for contemporary Sino-foreign exchanges.
