Are top-notch students who receive quality mentor resources receiving appropriate guid-ance and cultivation? The relationship between mentors and students in the cultivation program of top innovative talents in top universities in China deserves attention.Based on the data of"Surveys of Top Students in Basic Disciplines of Top universities in China"conducted in the 2017 and 2023 academic years, this study observed the mentoring effect of students'feedback under the background of the men-toring system from the perspective of sociological new institutionalism, and identified four types of mentor-student relationships, namely"harmonious,""cooperative,""adoring,"and"estranged,"through potential category analysis.Further analysis shows that the top students in the"harmonious"relationship perform particularly well in the aspects of paper output and professional interest;Top students in"cooperative"relationships also perform well in terms of academic aspirations; The top students in the"estranged"relationship are in a relatively difficult situation. After the commencement of the Top-notch program 2.0 and the Strong Foundation Program, the proportion of"harmonious"(40%)and"cooperative"(30%)remained unchanged, the proportion of"estranged"decreased, and the proportion of"adoring"increased, indicating the progress of the construction of the top-notch pro-gram.The"harmonious"is the most beneficial to the growth of innovative talents, which means that the relationship between mentors and students is closer, and they can respect, trust, understand and resonate with each other.Compared with the"cooperative,"it is not only more productive but also more conducive to nurturing academic aspirations.
