Supplement,Resistance and Creation:Triple Mechanisms for the Presentation of"Technologies of the Self"in Murder Mystery——An Ethnographic Study of Murder Mystery Games
As a kind of puzzle game played by real people, murder mystery game has attracted much attention from the academia because of its popularity among young people in recent years. This paper focuses on the empirical question of"why murder mystery games attract young people",and uses anthropological fieldwork to delve into the world of the game and clarify the formation mechanism of the attractiveness of murder mystery games within the theoretical framework of Foucault's"technologies of the self".The ethnographic research shows that the relatively free game environment, the loose and visible game rules and the virtual characters game setting make murder mystery a possible space for young players to express their"technologies of the self".In the process of games play, young players fill in the game script through"supplement",construct the tacit rules of the game through"resistance",and reshape the game process through"creation".This game practice completely presents and practices the technologies of the self centered on"discovering self","looking after self"and"pleasing self",through which young players gain a complete meaning of life.In an era where contemporary youth groups are full of competition and involution, the presentation of technologies of the self is an important motivation for the popularity of murder mystery. To a certain extent, the presentation of technologies of the self in murder mystery games reflects the dialectical relationship between the individual and society in the experiential scene:society is not only an external existence full of coercion and constraints, but also a place where the individual can be"in close contact"and"moderately separated"from it.
