A Historical Study on Climate Change in the Upper Reaches of the Yellow River from the 10th to 13th Century
The provinces of Gansu,Qinghai, and Ningxia are situated in the upper reaches of the Yellow River within the deep inland region of northwest China.Due to their delicate ecological environment, they exhibit a high sensitivity towards climate variations encompassing cold, warm, dry, and wet conditions.By analyzing relevant historical literature records and complementing them with research findings from natural sciences fieldwork,it is determined that the climate in the upper reaches of the Yellow River underwent significant cyclic changes from the 10th to 13th century. These changes involved transitioning from a cold period to a warm period and then returning back to a cold period.Simultaneously, there was also an evident shift from relatively humid climatic conditions towards persistently arid ones.It should be noted that climate change is not influenced by human willpower alone;hence even within large-scale century cycles, small fluctuations and seasonal characteristics continue to manifest in the climate patterns observed in this region.
