Accelerated Construction Techniques of Concrete Overpass
The Lishui Avenue Overpass in Foshan City consists of three parallel superstructures(the west, the central and the east)that span over Guangzhou-Foshan Expressway. To prevent the likely transportation risks and widen the carriageways,it was determined to reconstruct the overpass. An accelerated construction method of using self-propelled modular transporters(SPMTs)to integrally remove the original central and west superstructures and install the new superstructures and piers is proposed, which brings less disturbance to the traffic below, compared to the utilization of gantry cranes in the west superstructure, resulting in reduced safety risk and improved construction efficiency. To minimize the safety risk and traffic disturbance, the girders and piers were fabricated off site, and integrally transported to the bridge site using the SPMTs.With traffic closed, the piers were temporarily-connected with an installation subsystem and the pile caps, and the SPMTs drove away, and the traffic was resumed.Afterwards, the piers were permanently connected. The piers and the superstructures were rapidly installed in parallel due to the utilization of the rapid connection subsystem of the prefabricated piers and the SMPTs,and the cracking of the small concrete box girders during the installation by SMPTs was significantly alleviated. The engineering practice proves that the proposed integral transportation and accelerated construction method improves the construction efficiency, reduces traffic disturbance, and improve the safety level of the project, which will have potential utilization in similar projects.
