Design of Xintian Changjiang River Highway Bridge in Chongqing
The main bridge of Xintian Changjiang River Highway Bridge in Chongqing is a two-tower suspension bridge featuring a suspended main span of 1 020 m,with no piers standing in the Changjiang River. The stiffening girder consists of flat streamlined steel box girders. The towers are portal-frame structures, the Gaofeng-side tower has an upstream column and a downstream column measuring 169.5 m and 153.5 m high, respectively, while the Xintian-side tower rises 169.5 m.The tower foundations involve large-diameter piles, and each tower column rests on an independent pile cap.The main cables are anchored by the spatial, irregular gravity anchorages that are mounted on spread foundations, inside which the unbonded galvanized steel-strand cables constitute the anchor system. The main cables are composed of prefabricated parallel steel wires with nominal tensile strength of 1 860 MPa,the hanger cables consist of parallel steel wires with a nominal tensile strength of 1 670 MPa,the cable clamps in the side spans and at mid main-span are welded clamps, and the remaining clamps are cast clamps. The approach bridges are arranged in 30 m-long spans of prestressed concrete T girders, with substructures of large-diameter piles and piers. The steep rock over the Gaofeng-side approach bridge was treated by shoring, clearing debris and strengthening. The consequent slope against front edge of Xintian-side tower was strengthened by anti-slide piles. The steel box girder segments were fabricated in the factory, shipped to bridge site for assembly. The steel box girders for the bank slope zones were swung into position.
