GENDER DIFFERENCES IN CLINICAL FEATURES OF INVOLUNTARY INPATIENTS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA IN QINGDAO,CHINA
Objective To investigate the gender differences in clinical features of involuntary inpatients with schizophre nia in Qingdao,China.Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on the general data of 79 males and 70 females who were involuntary inpatients with schizophrenia.The status of the disease and their aggressive behaviors and social function were assessed using Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS),Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS),and Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF),respectively.Results The females had a significantly older mean age,significantly lower proportions of unmarried and unemployed persons,and a significantly higher proportion of persons living alone than the males,the differences were significant (t =4.08,P<0.05;x2 =6.33-24.40,P<0.05).The males had a significantly lower BPRS score and a significantly higher GAF score than the females (t =2.02,2.04;P<0.05).And the males had a significantly lower proportion of persons with aggressive behavior than the females (x2 =5.74,P <0.05).The males had significantly higher MOAS scores of verbal attack,aggression against property,and autoaggression and a significantly higher MOAS score of severe aggressive behaviors (MOAS ≥8)than the females (t =2.15-5.07,P<0.05).The females had a significantly higher proportion of persons with forced medication and a significantly lower proportion of persons with physical constraints than the males (x2 =4.69,6.10;P<0.05).Conclusion Among the involuntary inpatients with schizophrenia,the females are older and have more severe symptoms and worse social function than the males;while the males have higher proportions of unmarried and unemployed persons and less but more severe aggressive behaviors than the females.
