THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NEGATIVE EMOTIONS AND ILLNESS UNCERTAINTY IN THE SPOUSES OF PATIENTS WITH PERMANENT COLOSTOMY
Objective To examine the current levels of anxiety and depression and illness uncertainty in the spouses of patients with permanent colostomy,and to determine the correlation between these negative emotions and illness uncertainty.Methods A total of 144 spouses of patients with permanent colostomy were surveyed using the general information scale,Self-Rating Anxiety Scale,Self-Rating Depression Scale,and Mishel Uncertainty In Illness Scale-Family Member Form.Factors that in fluence anxiety and depression and the correlation between anxiety and depression and illness uncertainty were analyzed.Results Among the spouses of patients with permanent colostomy,the mean score of anxiety was 46.90± 10.45,the mean score of depression was 43.26 ± 10.20,and the mean score of illness uncertainty was 73.40 ±9.48.The gender of spouse caregivers,self-rated health status and average monthly household income were factors that influence anxiety and depression,and the spouses' employment status and patients' medical payment method were factors that influence anxiety.The levels of anxiety and depression were positively correlated with illness uncertainty and each of its dimensions (r=0.173-0.460,P<0.05).Conclusion Anxiety and depression are associated with illness uncertainty in the spouses of patients with permanent colostomy.Medical workers should be more aware of the level of illness uncertainty in spouse caregivers in order to reduce their anxiety and depression.
