New treatment strategies for prostate cancer:Applications and molecular mechanisms of selenium-containing nanomaterials
Objective To review and analyze the research progress of selenium-containing nanomaterials in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, and to provide ideas and references for its clinical application.Method With"selenium,nano-selenium,prostate cancer"as the key words, the relevant literatures published in PubMed and CNKI from 1970 to 2023 were searched.Inclusion criteria:(1)clinical studies involving selenium or selenium-containing nanomaterials;(2)including prostate cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy and other diagnosis and treatment methods.Ex-clusion criteria:Duplicate, outdated data and controversial studies were excluded.Finally,68 articles were included.Re-sult Prostate cancer ranks prominently among the most prevalent malignancies of the urinary system in elderly males. The pursuit of innovative therapeutic agents for prostate cancer remains at the forefront of medical research.Traditional selenium derivatives, such as methylselenic acid, exhibit antioxidant and antitumoral capacities. However, their narrow therapeutic windows constrain their broader clinical utility. In recent years, the favorable toxicity profile and heightened bioactivity of nanomaterials have catalyzed the emergence of modified selenium-infused nanomaterials as prospective anti-cancer agents. Conclusion The application of selenium-containing nanomaterials in prostate cancer focuses on both detec-tion and treatment.Compared with the traditional form of selenium,it has certain advantages in prostate cancer chemo-therapy,radiotherapy and new photothermal therapy. This review elucidates the function and underlying mechanisms of nano-selenium in both the diagnosis and therapeutic management of prostate cancer, aiming to spur further research and deployment in oncology.
