Current status and prospects of proton therapy for brain metastasis cancer
Objective To review the current status and future prospects of proton therapy in the treatment of brain metasta-ses.Methods The key words"tumor,radiation therapy,proton radiation therapy,brain metastasis tumor"were select-ed from PubMed and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases.A systematic search was conducted for rele-vant literature from April 1,2001,to April 30,2023.Inclusion criteria were as follows:(1)Proton therapy for brain metastases;(2)Radiotherapy for brain metastasis;(3)Proton therapy for brain tumors.Exclusion criteria:(1)Relevant studies with outdated data;(2)literature with similar or duplicate content.A total of 45 articles were included.Results Proton therapy for brain metastases can reduce therapeutic toxicity,better protect endangered organs and normal tissues,improve long-term survival,and have good application value.The tumor control effect of large-scale proton ther-apy is comparable to that of photon therapy.Innovative proton therapy methods,such as proton mini beam radiotherapy and proton FLASH therapy,can further reduce toxicity.At present,there is limited research on proton therapy for brain metastases,and a large number of high-level clinical studies are needed to verify its effectiveness.Conclusion Proton therapy may become a new and effective method for treating brain metastases in the future,but it is necessary to strengthen com-prehensive application and research on the development of new technologies.
