Research progress on the role and mechanism of fatty acids in colorectal cancer
Objective To investigate the role and associated mechanisms of dietary fatty acids in the development and onset of colorectal cancer. The goal of this study is to provide valuable dietary recommendations for promoting the colorectal cancer prevention and treatment. Methods The key words of"colorectal cancer, fatty acid, lipid metabolism,inflamma-tion,gut microbiota"were searched in PubMed database from January 2010 to September 2023.Inclusion criteria:(1)Classification and biological characteristics of fatty acids;(2)The role and associated mechanisms of fatty acids in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer;and(3)The application of fatty acids in the prevention and treatment of colorectal canc-er.Exclusion criteria:(1)Literature with ambiguous research mechanism;(2)Conference and commentary literature;and(3)Literature with overlapping or duplicated content.A total of 81 eligible articles were included in this analysis.Re-sults Fatty acids exert their influence on the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer through disruptions in lipid metabolism and inflammatory reactions.Additionally, the interactions between fatty acids and gut microbiota are also involved in this process.Specifically, saturated fatty acids and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids have been found to promote colorectal canc-er,while ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids demonstrate inhibitory effects on colorectal cancer progression. Conclusion Modifying the dietary ratio of various fatty acids can effectively reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and may provide inno-vative approaches for the treatment of colorectal cancer.
