Marriage Market Segmentation and Both-Sex Marriage Squeeze in Counties
In Chinese central counties, there exists the phenomenon of both-sex marriage squeeze, which has changed society and academic circle's traditional cognition of"leftover women in the cities"and"bachelors in the rural areas".According to the findings, under the infuence of mate-choice preferences, the marriage market is segmented into several sub-markets,and the structural constraints would make it difficult or impossible for marriageable people to intermarry across the boundaries of sub-markets.Combining the perspectives of preference structure and reality structure, this study finds that different marriage sub-markets face different types of marriage squeeze due to the differences in marriageable population's mate-choice preferences, marriage resources and demographic structure, which ultimately lead to the phenomenon of both-sex marriage squeeze within a region. The phenomenon of"marriage market segmentation"is a new explanatory framework for both-sex marriage squeeze, and it can also help to capture the changes in marriage culture and values.
