Embodied Relationship as Projection:Graphicon Use in Online Communication
This paper examines graphicon use in online social intercourse from the perspective of bodily experience to extract theories from the motives of usage summarized by existing studies on graphicons.Based on the methods of self-report and in-depth interview, this study finds a unique embodied relationship between the communication subject and the graphicons. It relies on the subject's projection of bodily experience onto graphicons. When people's perception of communication contexts is limited by mediation technology and thus difficult to be fully presented, discomfort will emerge from the perceptual disruption. The graphicon then becomes a medium for people to refine their expressions and expand their bodily experience.Tracing graphicon use back to the body perception of the subject also inspires reflection on the significance of the body in online communication.
