From Conceptualization to Metaphorization-Images of China in 20th Century Western Literature
Images of China in Western literary works of the 20th century are relatively diverse and cannot be simply interpreted in a"heaven/hell"style using the theory of utopia/ideology.This article points out that images of China in 20 th Century Western litera-ture can be categorized into three types——those that are characterized by conceptualization and stereotypes, those that aim at cultural communication and cultural exchange, and those that serve as metaphors and symbols. The first type of images is based on the western collective imagination of China and focuses on the otherness and heterogeneity of Chinese culture. The second type of images aims to promote the communication and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, trying to correct the stereotyped imagination of the West a-bout China and restore a true image of China, but on the other hand, consciously or unconsciously falls into the trap of Orientalism. The third type of images treats China as a cultural symbol that embodies specific cultural ideas. The images of China in this type are full of metaphorical features, but lose their concrete significance.
