A Study of kyakhta pidgin in the perspective of Sino-Russian tea trade
This paper examines the Kyakhta pidgin as a traditional linguistic phenomenon in the historical framework of Sino-Rus-sian tea trade.On the basis of a brief overview of the history of the tea trade in Kyakhta it reveals the formation of Kyakhta pidgin,based on Russian but deeply influenced by Chinese.The Kyakhta pidgin tends to be phonetically and morphologically consistent with Chinese:it follows the principle of"Open syllables",tries to avoid the combination of two or more consonant phonemes,and has no more inflections in words.The Kyakhta pidgin is not only a phenomenon of language transfer and a strategy adopted by tea merchants to accommodate their partners,but also a reflection of exchange and cultural integrationamong different ethnic groups along the Russian-Chinese border.
