A Study of Narrative Discourse Representation in Nicky Harman's Translation of Happy Dreams
Gao Xing, one of representative works of Jia Pingwa's grassroots writing, boasts unique narrative art.Based on classical narratology, this paper analyzes the narrative discourse representation from two aspects:focalization and speech and thought representa-tion by comparing the original work and Nicky Harman's Happy Dreams, its English version. The study found that different ways ofnar-rative discourse representationhave different expressive effects on the novel. The translator Nicky Harman used flexible translation meth-ods to successfully represent the focalization and speech and thought representation of the original work, which is conducive to the dis-semination of the English translation to some extent.Through the analysis of Happy Dreams'narrative discourse representation,it aims to provide a new research dimension for this English version and provide reference for the"going out"of other Chinese literary works.
