Based on the traditional modal classification ideas and the Chinese expression facts,we add three modal types in Chi-nese:functional modality,environmental modality and valuable modality.All three types can be directly expressed by the lexical mean-ing of Chinese auxiliary verbs,so they are all semantic modalities.Through this research,we find that the three modal types are differ-ent from the traditional types in terms of modal contributing factors and the specific contents of modal meaning expressed,and they also have different characteristics in terms of syntactic use and pragmatic expression function in speech acts,which makes the establishment of the three types reasonable to a certain extent.
