Effectiveness of an emergency medicine case immersion teaching method based on Outcomes-Based Education philosophy in enhancing clinical adaptability skills among medical students
Objective To explore the effectiveness of an emergency medicine case immersion teaching method based on the Outcomes-Based Education(OBE)philosophy on improving clinical adaptability skills in clinical professional students. Methods This retrospective cohort study analyzed undergraduate third-year medical, anesthesia, and radiology students who took emergency medicine courses at Guangdong Medical University from the second half of 2021 to 2023.Students from the second half of 2021 were taught using the five-step blended teaching method, while those from the second halves of 2022 and 2023 were taught using an emergency medicine case immersion teaching method based on the OBE philosophy.Students were divided into two groups:a five-step blended teaching method group(n=942)and an OBE-based case immersion teaching group(n=1783),according to their teaching approach. The effectiveness of different teaching methods was evaluated by comparing clinical practice ability scores, theoretical test scores, and practical operation scores between the two groups. Results In terms of clinical practice ability scores, students taught using the immersive case-based method outperformed those in the five-step blended teaching group in history-taking skills(P=0.007),professional attitude(P=0.003),communication skills(P=0.002),clinical judgment(P=0.009),procedural techniques(P=0.008),aseptic technique(P=0.007),overall coherence(P=0.025),overall coordination(P=0.025),and humanitarianism(P=0.023).Regarding theoretical test scores, the immersive case-based teaching group had significantly higher average scores in basic knowledge(P=0.045).For practical operation scores, students using the immersive case-based method scored significantly higher in on-site emergency care, trauma emergency care, disease management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and acute poisoning treatment(P<0.05).Conclusions The emergency medicine case immersion teaching method based on the OBE philosophy demonstrated significant effectiveness in enhancing medical students'clinical adaptability and related skills. It not only improved students'clinical practice abilities, theoretical test scores, and practical operation scores but also increased their satisfaction.
