Lack of Meanings:The Fundamental Causes of Game Addiction among Rural Students——A Qualitative Study Using King's Honor as a Game Sample
With the popularization of the mobile Internet and the widespread use of electronic products, the amount of time that young people spend on various forms of online games is increasing, and the phenomenon of addiction caused by excessive gaming is becoming more and more prominent, with the problem of gaming addiction among rural students being particularly prominent. The existing studies have neglected the unique cultural and social situations of rural students, and thus cannot explain the fundamental causes of addiction well.Field data show that rural students experience a double crisis of meaning in their studies and lives:they feel"hopeless in studying"when they look at the future, and they have no place to settle down when they turn to reality to seek meaning in their lives.Certainly, the crisis is not insurmountable. When games meet with rural students, the competitive mechanism of games, the rich and colorful socialization of games and the worship of peers allow rural students to find a new support, and the self-revelry of games replaces the search for meanings of studies and future, and they find new meanings and settle down in their lives in games.Further,in the view of this paper,"game addiction"is actually a kind of life settlement, which is constructing a new subject and seeking a new way of life existence. It is not difficult to find that the results of the study provide a new and worthwhile theoretical framework for analyzing the phenomenon of game addiction among rural students, and also reveal a new perspective for understanding the encounters and destinies of rural students in the digital age.
