From Socrates to ChatGPT:Expanding Dialogic Space in Teaching and Learning—An Interview with Professor Rupert Wegerif from the University of Cambridge
The dialogic education theory posits that the core of teaching activities lies in the interactive process between teachers and students, namely the activity of dialogue. In contrast to traditional didactic teaching methods,it emphasizes the collision and integration of heterogeneous viewpoints and knowledge during dialogue, thereby generating new knowledge and reshaping the cognitive structure and thinking patterns of the dialogue participants.Professor Rupert Wegerif is a distinguished scholar in the field of dialogic education who introduced the concept of the"dialogic gap"and advocated for"teaching across the dialogic gap".He believes that dialogic education should be achieved through the opening up and expanding the dialogic spaces,Furthermore,he argues that in the context of the digital age,the development of technologies such as the internet, metaverse, and artificial intelligence can provide new dimensions for the expansion of dialogic spaces.Especially with the widespread application of artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT,we have to rethink Socrates'concept of dialogic teaching and the potential of"dialogue"in promoting student thinking development, achieving knowledge co-construction,and generating collective wisdom.
