A Study on International Chinese Teacher Volunteers'Roles from the Perspective of Power Distance Theory
Based on Geert Hofstede's Power Distance Theory, this paper makes narrative inquiries into 12 international Chinese teacher volunteers'roles from different power distance societies in terms of three aspects:teacher status, teacher types and teachers'disciplinary measures. The results indicated that international Chinese teacher volunteers in high power distance society enjoy high social status and authority, while teacher volunteers in low power distance society are equals with students and are regarded as"experts"who impart knowledge. In addition, while teachers in high power distance society prefer punishments, teachers in low power distance society prefer other disciplinary measures.Furthermore, drawing on the macro and micro power theories, this paper makes detailed analyses of how teacher status, types and disciplinary measures have been shaped in the high/low power distance societies. Finally, the paper points out that teacher differences in different power distance societies are rooted in culture. No matter what kind of power distance societies they are in,teacher volunteers should adjust themselves to the new surroundings and improve their cross-cultural adaptability as quickly as possible,be aware of their professional roles in language teaching, strive to enhance cross-cultural teaching abilities, and promote their management abilities in cross-cultural settings.
