Is Mathematics Vocabulary Important?—The Mediating Effect of Mathematics Vocabulary between General Cognitive Abilities and Performance in Different Mathematical Tasks
The Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)proposes to cultivate students'core competencies of"using the mathematical language to describe the real world",with mathematics vocabulary being an important component of mathematical language.Investigating the role of mathematics vocabulary in different mathematical tasks is crucial for fostering mathematical key competencies and improving the quality of education. This study surveyed 249 third-grade students in two regular primary schools and analyzed the data using structural equation modeling. The results show that, after controlling for students'Raven reasoning ability and working memory capacity, mathematics vocabulary variable significantly predicted students'performance on different mathematical tasks. In addition, mathematics vocabulary partially mediated the relationship between general cognitive abilities and performance on different mathematical tasks. The results of this study not only clarify the value and significance of mathematics vocabulary in mathematics learning, enrich the theory of children's mathematics learning and development, and deepen the understanding and awareness of mathematics teaching, but also provide theoretical support for the implementation of targeted mathematics vocabulary teaching and interventions, offering a new perspective for improving the mathematical performance of primary school students.
