Western Opera Insights in Extraterritorial Travelogue and Thoughts of Opera Improvement in the Late Qing Dynasty
During the late Qing Dynasty,the revolution in literature initiated by LIANG Qi-chao started from poetry and literature,and then expanded to novels and operas.The revolution in opera,as one of the important items,has been ambiguous as to the source of its influence.When we read the list of overseas travels in The Bibliography of Western Learning,the accounts of Western opera inspired the idea of improving opera to a cer-tain extent.By selecting those accounts that met the reader's expectations and playing them up in his imagina-tion,LIANG constructed a national perception of western theatre while obscuring the overall appearance of Western opera.Subsequently,the remarks of Ou Ju-jia and others on the improvement of the opera were also influenced by these travelogues to varying degrees.The Western opera insights in the extraterritorial travel-ogues of the late Qing Dynasty constituted an undiscovered landscape for the improvement of opera.
