Digital Economy and the Construction of a Unified National Market:A City-level Study
Under the double-cycle development pattern,the construction of a unified national market helps to promote the formation of new quality productivity and the high-quality transformation and development of the economy.The booming development of digital economy provides a new path for the construction of the unified national market.This article empirically examines how the digital economy contributes to the construction of a unified national market by measuring its index using Chinese city-level data from 2005 to 2021.The results show that the digital economy contributes to the formation of a unified national market by improving the effi-ciency of distribution,deepening the specialized division of labour,and reinforcing the effect of urban net-works.At the same time,the implementation of the"Broadband China"strategy promotes the integration of the unified market.The market integration effects of the digital economy vary significantly across cities with differ-ent geographic locations,levels of economic development,city sizes,levels of digitization,and degrees of mar-ket integration.Further analysis reveals that the digital economy has a long-term effect on the formation of a unified national market,with an increasing trend of marginal effect and spatial spillover effect.
