The"24 Turns"of Qinglong was a famous winding mountain road on the Southwest International Corridor during the Anti Japanese War,which played a crucial role in maintaining contact between China and the Allied forces. From work reports of the Southwest Highway Bureau and literature such as newspapers and magazines during the Republic of China period,it was found that the construction and improvement project of the"24 Turns"was influenced by the"unification"policy, the construction of the rear area, and the victory of the Anti Japanese War.It can be divided into three stages:firstly aiming to responding to the Nationalist government's"unification"policy and opening up the Beijing Yunnan Highway from 1936 to 1941;secondly supporting the construction of the China India Highway, which became a symbol of Sino US cooperation from 1942 to 1945;and thirdly declining after 1945 i.e.the victory of the Anti Japanese War.The construction goals, participants and impacts varied in each period of time. The historical practice of the construction and improvement of the"24 Turns"shows that road construction not only provides a foundation for the country's"presence",but also requires effective national governance to ensure its normal function.
