Public Opinion and Sovereignty Protection Triggered by Sino-Japanese Xisha Incident
In the 1920s,the trend of"southward advance of aquatic products"in Japan continued to rise with China's the South China Sea Islands bearing the brunt.Under the guidance and support of the Japanese government,a group of Japanese businessmen colluded with unscrupulous Chinese merchants to encroach on the resources of Xisha by having He Ruinian and others apply to undertake island industry and Japanese actually control the operation. In February 1922,Chen Minghua exposed the crime of Japanese people making use of He Ruinian to invade Xisha, triggering a seven-year and wide-ranging campaign to defend the sovereignty of the Xisha Islands."Republic of China Daily"and other newspa-pers continued to follow and report on this movement, which promoted the transformation of public opinion in Qiongya into a collective force of people's popular will, elevated the people's spontaneous rights protection struggle to the govern-ment's consciousness, and contributed to the successful resolution of the Xisha Incident.
