Chinese Intellectual Elites'Response to Japan's Occupation of Nansha——A Study Centered on Newspapers and Periodicals in the Republic of China
Japan's annexation of Nansha Islands at the end of March 1939 was a major step in Japan's"southward advance"after the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression entered a stalemate phase. At that time, through inten-sive publication of editorials and articles in newspapers and periodicals, domestic intellectual elites put forward China's response to the Japanese occupation of Nansha:insisting that the sovereignty of Nansha Islands belonged to China;deter-mining that the Spratly Islands were China's Tuansha Islands;studying and deciding that the Japanese occupation of Nansha was the sword aiming at the colonies of France,Britain, the United States, and the Netherlands in Southeast Asia, and had nothing to do with the war in China. This not only enhanced the Chinese people's further patriotic feel-ings after the stalemate stage of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and accelerated the formation of the anti fascist united front, but also laid a strong public opinion and ideological foundation for the actions of the Chinese government to effectively govern the South China Sea Islands after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, such as officially recovering the South China Sea Islands, changing"Tuansha Islands"to"Nansha Islands",and drawing Location Map of South China Sea Islands.
