Climatic Characteristics of Thunderstorm in Hainan Island
The spatial daily distribution of thunderstorm in Hainan Island were analysed by using Empirical Orthogonal Funetion(EOF) based on daily thunderstorm data from 19 stations for 43 years from 1965 to 2007. The results showed thunderstorms frequented Hainan Island, with thunderstorm days being more than 94 days/year by average for all the cities and counties in Hainan Island and 149 days at maximum. The spatial distribution of the thunderstorm days is obviously regional: more thunderstorm days in the central and northern parts of Hainan Island and relatively fewer in the south. The number of thunderstorm days varied significantly in seasons: small in winter but obviously large in summer with the maximum in July (22 days of thunderstorm). Moreover, there was a quasi period of 16 years and an alternating period of 5 years for interannual change of thunderstorm days.
