Fiber Morphology and Chemical Components of Cassava Stem
Cassava is developing rapidly as a new biomass energy crop in China especially in Guangxi.A lot of waste such as cassava stem and cassava residue have become a big question in the development of the cassava industry. To explore a new value-added method of cassava stem, the fiber morphology and chemical components of three different cassava stem (species A,species B,species C) in Guangxi were studied in this paper. The results showed that the three different cassava stems had significant difference in the fiber length and width, and the average length, width, double wall thickness, aspect ratio and wall thickness lumen ratio was 904 μm,34 μm,7.32 μm,27 and 0.27,respectively.The total contents of ash,cool-water extractives,hot-water extractives,1% NaOH extractives,benzene-alcohol extractives, cellulose, and acid-insoluble lignin of cassava stem of species A was 3.46%,11.89%,14.15%,22.22%,6.96%,41.49%,and 21.44%,respectively.The analysis indicated that the fiber length of cassava stem belonged to the medium and short range fiber material and the content of cellulose was high. Therefore, the cassava stem is suitable for fiberboard and papermaking industry with other longer fiber length raw material.
