Effects of Quench-Tempering and Austempering on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of SAE6150 Steel
The quench-tempering and austempering heat treatment tests were applied on SAE6150 steel. The effects of tempering temperature and austempering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SAE6150 steel were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of quench-tempered SAE6150 steel consists of tempered martensite and retained austenite. As increasing the tempering temperature, the plate-like morphology of tempered martensite gradually disappears, and the size and amount of cementite and alloy carbide increase. After receiving the austempering process, bainite is present in the matrix of SAE6150 steel. As increasing the austempering temperature, the morphology of ferrite is transformed from thin needle-like into feather-like shape. For mechanical properties, the hardness, yield strength and tensile strength decrease and area reduction and elongation increase with increasing the tempering temperature.By comparing the mechanical properties of austempered and quench-tempered SAE6150 steel, austempered specimens with low austempering temperature show higher hardness and strength under similar area reduction and elongation.
