Effect of Carbon Fiber Surface Treatment on Properties of Copper-based Friction Materials
Cu-based friction materials with short cut carbon fibers were prepared by powder metallurgy. The effects of carbon fiber coarsening and copper plating on the microstructure, mechanical properties and friction and wear properties of copper-based friction materials were studied. The results show that, after adding untreated carbon fibers, the hardness and density of the friction material are lowest, and the friction coefficient and wear rate are largest at different initial braking speeds due to the poor interfacial properties between carbon fibers and copper matrix. The friction coefficient of carbon fiber treated by coarsening is lower than that of non-carbon fiber, and the hardness and density are lower.Because carbon fiber copper plating improves the wettability and binding state between carbon fiber and matrix, hardness and density decrease slightly.Carbon fiber plays the role of solid lubricant, the friction coefficient is stable, and the wear amount of carbon fiber copper plating sample is lowest.
