Does Urban Renewal Improve Urban Metabolic Efficiency?Evidence from DID and Spatial Durbin Model
Based on the panel data of 280 prefectural-level cities in China from 2004 to 2020,the impact of urban renewal(UR)on urban metabolic efficiency(UME)is examined using the difference in difference(DID)method and spatial Durbin model, using the old neighborhood pilot as a quasi-natural experiment of UR.This study reveals that UR significant-ly and robustly enhances UME.Mechanism analysis shows that UR enhances UME mainly through four paths:catalyzing in-dustrial structure upgrading, promoting green investment, driving consumption upgrading, and improving infrastructure con-struction.The spatial correlation test result indicates that UME has a significant positive spatial correlation. The results of spatial spillover effects demonstrate that UR significantly drives UME enhancement in local and neighboring regions.
