Impact Mechanism of Resource-based City Formation Patterns on Industrial Structural Upgrading
This paper re-examines the"resource curse"effect based on the new perspective of the resource-based city formation process.Based on the development history of cities,32 coal resource cities are divided into 23"mining first and then city"cities and 9"city first and then mine"cities. Then, the impact of different formation processes of cities on indus-trial upgrading and its mechanisms are examined empirically using panel data of resource cities from 2005 to 2019.It was found that the formation process of"mining first and then city"robustly and significantly inhibits industrial upgrading in re-source-based cities;the mechanisms test finds that the inhibitory effect is mainly realized by crowding out manufacturing development, lowering expectation of human capital accumulation, and inhibiting the development of the financial industry.
