"Empower"or"Burden":The Double-edged Sword Effect of Algorithmic Management of Digital Labor Platform on Workers'Job Performance
Based on the cognitive appraisal theory of stress,this paper empirically analyzes the double-edged sword effect of algorithm management on workers'job performance.Based on the analysis of 330 workers in two food delivery platforms,results show that(1)both challenging cognitive appraisal and threatening cognitive appraisal partially mediate the relation-ship between algorithmic management and job performance;(2)regulatory focus moderates the relationship between algo-rithmic management and challenging/threatening cognitive appraisal;(3)regulatory focus moderates the mediating role of challenging cognitive appraisal and threatening cognitive appraisal,such that the mediating role of challenging cognitive ap-praisal is stronger while the mediating role of threatening cognitive appraisal is weaker for employees with promotion focus.
