The Impact of the Digital Economy on the Economic Disparity Between Central and Peripheral Cities
Based on the panel data of cities in China from 2011 to 2020,this paper tests the impact of digital economy on the economic disparity between central and peripheral cities. The results show that the digital economy can significantly reduce the economic disparity between central and peripheral cities, and the conclusion still holds after considering the endogeneity problem. The mechanism test indicates that the innovation gap is an important transmission path for the digital economy to affect the economic disparity between center and peripheral cities.Further analysis reveals that there is heterogeneity in the impact of the digital economy on the economic disparity between central and peripheral cities based on city location and the size of the central city.Compared with peripheral cities far away from the central city, the digital economy can significantly reduce the economic gap between the central city and its adjacent peripheral cities. In addition, when the size of the central city is too large and creates an excessive agglomeration of digital resources in the surrounding cities, the effect of the digital economy on the economic disparity between cities is no longer a significant reduction effect.
