The crime of illegally chopping down trees severely damages the ecological environment and endangers the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. An empirical analysis based on 593 court verdicts demon-strates that such crimes exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of perpetrators, methods employed, and targets. The oc-currence of these crimes is closely related to forest resource monitoring, forest resource management, and case investi-gation and prosecution. Therefore,it is necessary to align preventive measures with the specific characteristics of these crimes by establishing a timber traceability system, instituting a supervision and reporting mechanism, and building an integrity management system.Simultaneously,it is essential to promote reforms in the forest rights system, implement a village-level forest chief responsibility system, and adopt restorative justice practices to curb the occurrence of such crimes in a sustainable manner.
