Chen Hansheng's Rural Survey in Southwest China and His Examination of Social Structures in the Southwestern Borderlands
The rural survey in Southwest China was a crucial part of Chen Hansheng's research on agrarian society and a key link in proving"the necessity of reforming China's feudal land system".His work effectively demonstrated the deeply entrenched nature of semi-colonialism and semi-feudalism in China.By placing the rural issues of China's borderlands within an international context,Chen examined the changes,or rather the collapse,of the agrarian system and social structures in the southwestern borderlands against the backdrop of global imperialist expansion.Adopting the Marxist materialist historical view,Chen conducted extensive field surveys in Chinese rural areas, comparing the Baiyi in Yunnan and the Kangba societies in Xikang. He used them as historical samples of"proto-feudal"and"feudal"societies,thereby deepening the Marxist theory of social formations.
