With the publication of A Spirit of Trust,Brandon established the Hegelian stage of analytic philoso-phy.He interpreted Hegel's phenomenology of spirit(Die Phanomenologie des Geistes)as semantics and believed that Hegel completed the normativity turn that originated from Kant and went through Sellars. However,Brandon's interpretation has sparked considerable controversy, with many Hegel experts offer-ing sharp criticisms, generally arguing that he misunderstood Hegel's original intention. As to the central content of the book, namely the essence of concepts and their normativity,Brandon and Hegel have signif-icant differences:Brandon's understanding of concepts includes both a dimension of content and a dimen-sion of representation,as well as an ability one grasp in one's practice of reasoning;while Hegel's under-standing of concepts contains rich meanings such as the basic unit of rational cognition, the self-movement of things and thoughts, and their unfolding states.Although Brandon's interpretation of Hegel is not en-tirely faithful to the true essence of Hegel's philosophy, his creative interpretation has brought new possi-bilities to analytic philosophy. It may lead to a more comprehensive and dialectical philosophy of language if further criticisms were embraced.
