On the Alienated Everyday Life and Its Redemption in Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry
Everyday life is the most common theme in Elizabeth Bishop's poetry.Through her detailed description of living spaces and practices,Bishop unveils the alienated everyday life brought about by modernization.Combining with Henri Lefebvre's critique of everyday life and taking the everyday life represented in Bishop's poetry as an research object, this paper probes into the alienated everyday life and its redemption in the poetry.Through the analysis of the above themes,it is found that Bishop exposes and criticizes the hypocrisy and injustice of capitalism and modem industrial society, takes the artistic style of life and dreams, imagination and memories from life as solutions to possibly redeem the alienated life.Bishop in her poetry shapes a new ideal order of life, attempting to rebuild a spiritual home in which modem people dwell.
