The Music Motif in Jeanette Winterson's The Gap of Time
Jeanette Winterson writes The Gap of Time, taking Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale as the archetype. This fiction not only forms an obvious intertextual relation with the play but also closely relates to music since there is a lot of music in this text. The study of the music motif is helpful to the study of this work, but there is little research on it by scholars at home and abroad. In light of close reading, this paper deals with the specific presentations of the music motif in The Gap of Time, including characters related to music, musical instruments and techniques of performances, the media of music, and music history, discusses the functions in the construction and creation of the text, such as promoting the development of the main plot, expressing basic emotions of characters and healing the trauma of characters, and elaborates its value of renewing the traditional themes with new ideas of the age, aiming at enriching the study of this fiction from the perspective of the neglected music motif.
