A Corpus-Based Critique of Translator's Behavior:Swearing Language in Lovell's English Rendition of Journey to the West
This article proposes a corpus-based translator behavior critique method.In line with a triple direction of updating"the cline of seeking truth and gaining utility",i.e.,specification,dedication,and stratification,this article outlines a system of the translation of swearing language in literary works encompassing swearing direction,conflict level,swearing specie,translation strategy,and the translator's behavior.Additionally,it introduces for the first time the concepts of semantic/pragmatic truth seeking and utility gaining.Based on a parallel corpus of Julia Lovell's translation of Journey to the West,we zoomed into on 16 swearing words appearing in 189 Chinese-English aligned sentence pairs and manually annotated them using qualitative analysis software MAXQDA in light of the aforementioned swearing language system.Network analysis and cluster analysis were used to demonstrate the translator behavior features,thus substantiating Lovell's position as a story re-narrator who speaks modem English to retell Chinese classic stories.
