The Other Half of English:Theory and Practice of English Education Centered on the English Cultural System
The current system of English education in China is centered on the linguistic form of English, with little reference to the English cultural system, which teaches students only half of whatever English should be taught. The students trained in this system could get high scores in all kinds of exams of linguistic skills, but they could not do a good job in actual communication with native English speakers because of their lack of understanding of English culture. In response to this problem,we designed an English education model centered on the English cultural system, with identification of the specific path of extensive and effective reading of English literature. And we have conducted a small-scale experiment in which students are tutored individually. After more than six years,we have achieved encouraging preliminary results:we found that the students educated in our program are not only able to master the linguistic form of English, but also able to well understand the English cultural system, which enables them to be able to communicate appropriately with native English speakers. That means they have grown to be a qualified English learner. All the students who took part in the experiment have been admitted to prestigious colleges such as the University of Cambridge, the University of Southern California, the Chinese University of Hong Kong,Sun Yat-sen University and others at home and abroad.
