A Study of the Reception of To Live:A Novel in the United States
Library collections,sales,academic citations and readers'reviews together constitute an evaluation system of the reception of translated works.Michael Berry's English translation of To Live:A Novel is widely circulated in America and is popular among readers.However,the academic citations of the book are not very encouraging,implying that the academic impact of the book needs to be enhanced.As for the readers'reviews,both professional readers and common readers have positive attitudes towards the English translation of To Live on the whole.Both of them recognize the human spirit presented in the book.Besides,professional readers'reviews focus more on the themes of the work,while common readers pay more attention to the characters.In terms of the quality of the translation,most readers make positive comments,but there are still a small number of negative comments indicating that the translation needs to be improved in phrasing and fluency.In light of the reception of the English translation of To Live in America,this paper puts forward suggestions for the global dissemination of translated Chinese literary works.
