An Analysis of the Current Context of Academic English Skills Cultivation in English Major Teaching
The latest teaching guidelines for English majors in universities bring new opportunities and challenges to English major teaching.This study investigated the academic English skills of English majors in four universities in China,and compared the differences in academic English capabilities of English majors in the four universities.Participants are from Grade One to Grade Four.Research instruments include questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.The results show that research skills and critical thinking skills are the common weaknesses of English majors in traditional universities,while the performance of students in Sino-foreign cooperative universities shows that English for Academic Purposes(EAP)courses can better cultivate the research skills and critical thinking ability of English majors,which is in line with the new spirit that English discipline teaching should pay attention to the cultivation of critical thinking and research ability,and change the main teaching direction of language skills.
