Study on the Cultural Identity Construction in Steer Toward Rock
15 years after the publication of Bone,Fae Myenne Ng,Chinese-American writer published her second fiction Steer Toward Rock in 2008,which is based on San Francisco Chinese-American history and her father's personal experience. This fiction portrays a"paper son"who was trapping in his self-identifi-cation during the McCarthy period, and reveals the trauma of Chinese-Americans left by McCarthy"Chinese Confession Program".The paper takes Homi K.Bhabha's hybridity theory as theoretical frame, and adopts close-reading as analytical approach to analyze the"paper son"'s cultural identity crisis and construction in Steer Toward Rock.Furthermore, the paper contributes to make a profound study on the cross-cultural phe-nomenon in the text of Steer Toward Rock, and provides a unique perspective to interpret what is cultural con-fidence.
