Effect of Different Particle Size Starches on Properties of Water-Based Drilling Fluid
Starch has the characteristics of wide source,non-toxic and easy degradation, which can effectively reduce the mud cake thickness of drilling fluid, and it is often used as a fluid loss reducer in water-based drilling fluid. In order to explore the effects of different particle sizes of starch on viscosity increasing and filtration reduction of drilling fluid, this paper prepared micro-starch by ball milling method, reducing its estimated particle size from 38.87 μm to 10.32 μm,increasing the specific surface area of starch, and allowing it to contact with more water molecules in drilling fluid. The hydration between the hydrogen bond on starch molecules and water molecules and the adsorption capacity of clay particles were improved, and the filtration reduction effect was better than that of corn starch, carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC)and hydroxyethyl cellulose(HEC).The change of starch particle size distribution affects the rheology and fluid loss reduction performance of water-based drilling fluid. This finding is expected to provide technical guidance for the selection of starch fluid loss reduction agents on drilling sites.
