Natural Attenuation Processes of Sulfonamide Antibiotics in the Aquatic Environment and Related Monitoring Methods
Sulfonamides are widely used in medicine as a type of antibiotic. However, the extensive use of antibiotics may lead to their presence in the aquatic environment and further contribute to the spread of resistance genes.Sulfonamides have been detected in water bodies, which indicates their persistence and emphasizes the importance of understanding their natural attenuation process in water bodies. This paper reviews the natural attenuation processes of sulfonamides in water bodies, with a particular focus on biodegradation assessment. It focuses on the characteristics of biodegradation and the parameters affecting biodegradation, and summarizes the means of detecting sulfonamide antibiotics during natural attenuation, which provides theoretical support for evaluating the spread of antibiotics in aquatic environments and proposing relevant strategies.
