The relationship between nature connectedness and depression among medical students:The chain mediating role of individual authenticity and self-esteem
Objective To explore the chain mediating role of individual authenticity and self-esteem in the relationship between nature connectedness and depression.Methods 826 medical students were assessed with Connectedness to Nature Scale(CNS),Authenticity Questionnaire(AQ),Self-Esteem Scale(SES)and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS).Results SDS score was negatively correlated with scores of CNS,AQ and SES(P<0.01);SES score was positively correlated with scores of CNS and AQ(P<0.01);AQ score was positively correlated with CNS score(P<0.01).Nature connectedness could predict individual authenticity,self-esteem and depression(P<0.001),individual authenticity could positively predict self-esteem(P<0.001),and negatively predict depression(P<0.001);self-esteem could negatively predict depression(P<0.001).The indirect effect of nature connectedness was produced through the chain mediation of individual authenticity and self-esteem,and the indirect effect accounted for 8.26%of the total effect.Conclusion Nature connectedness can affect depression directly or indirectly through individual authenticity and self-esteem.It is suggested that psychological workers should take appropriate psychological intervention methods to help medical students promote nature connectedness,improve individual authenticity,promote self-esteem,so as to relieve depression.
