Research on damage detection in pavement structures based on embedded MEMS wireless sensors
Pavement health monitoring based on intelligent sensing technology is of great signiffcance for road maintenance and management.A new approach is presented for the continuous health monitoring of pavements using embedded MEMS wireless sensors. It solves the defects of traditional road damage detection technology which is time-consuming and labor-intensive and cannot be monitored in real time.Numerical and experimental studies were carried out to evaluate the damage detection performance of the proposed embedded MEMS wireless sensors.3D finite element models are employed to investigate the response characteristics of healthy and degraded pavement structures under moving loads, whereby an index DI is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the damage characteristics. The effectiveness of embedded MEMS wireless sensors in monitoring crack expansion was investigated by performing three-point bending(TPB)fracture tests on cement mixes. The stresses recorded by the embedded MEMS sensors can be used to characterize the different stages of crack expansion and effectively detect road crack damage.
